Like many sporting codes, the endurance horse riding season has been hampered by wet weather across the state.
There’s been plenty of cancellations and postponements, but the Watagan Mountains Endurance Ride committee are steaming ahead with their event this weekend.
From the Sawyer’s Gully ride base, there are options for every rider and not just the hardcore endurance enthusiasts.
The casual rider or someone looking for a weekend away with their horse has the option of a 20 kilometre ride on Saturday, 11 October before the ones looking to step up head out for the 40-60km option or the 80km ride.
Ride secretary Alison Hegarty said numbers are a little smaller than if it was to fall in the middle of the season but the coming event has provided an opportunity for first timers.
“Having to rebook our ride date and squeeze in around other rides already on the calendar means unfortunately we are not expecting big numbers, but we are grateful to secure a new date and be able to offer another ride,” she said.
“So far we have a few locals and first-time riders entered and a few travelling from further afield.”

Hegarty said the track riders will follow is mild enough for those newcomers to have an enjoyable time.
“Our riders can expect to enjoy the beautiful Werakata National Park with all the blooming flora and fauna of Spring,” she said.
“Our track may not be as technical as some but still offers its own challenges.
“It is a great track for novice horses and riders to dip their toe into endurance or step up distances without being overly technical or difficult.
“Feedback we generally get is it is a nice quiet and flatter track that is still a lot of fun, with plenty of water, lollies and hay!
“Riders appreciate we have a small area to work within and understand the need for an out and back section and that we can only squeeze in one 40km loop. Riders have been understanding of having to do the same loop twice for the 80km ride.”
