France’s equestrian team pleased with rescheduled Olympics

Not everyone is disappointed with the Tokyo Olympic Games being moved to 2021. In fact, the French equestrian team believe the rescheduling is a blessing in disguise for them.

Showjumper Kevin Staut, who led the French jumping team to gold at Rio in 2016, believes the extra year will give the team a chance to train and improve – bettering their chances of defending their gold medal.

He believes the horses that were likely to make the team this year are not quite at their peak, and will be better off with another 12 months of training behind them. The team has been rebuilt since Rio with younger, up and coming horses, and those that were likely to be named for the 2020 Games are also likely to be in contention next year.

Eventing star Astier Nicolas also shares the same view; Astier won team gold and individual silver at Rio, and says that his horse is young and sound, and likely to be going even better in 2021.

Will we see the French teams take home eventing and jumping gold again at Tokyo in 2021? Time will tell!
