Olympic equestrian champion Chris Burton will be awarded the Keys to the City in recognition of his extraordinary sporting achievements and proud advocacy for the Toowoomba Region.

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Mayor Geoff McDonald said the honour represented the highest recognition Council could bestow and reflected Burton’s exceptional contribution both on and off the world stage.

“Chris is one of Australia’s most accomplished equestrian athletes and a proud son of the Toowoomba Region,” he said.

“From his early days riding in Brymaroo to standing on the Olympic podium, Chris has demonstrated extraordinary dedication, resilience and excellence.

“Chris is a dual Olympic medallist who has represented Australia at three Olympic Games, including winning the individual silver medal in Eventing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“He was also a member of the Australian team that claimed bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, contributing to Australia’s proud equestrian legacy and has competed successfully at the highest levels of international Eventing.”

Mayor McDonald said Burton’s achievements had brought international recognition to both Australian equestrian sport and the Toowoomba Region.

“Chris’s success on the global stage reinforces that regional communities like Toowoomba can produce world‑class athletes,” he said.

“He is an inspiration to young people across our Region and a powerful example of what can be achieved through commitment and hard work.”

Born in Toowoomba and raised on a grain and cattle farm near Brymaroo, Mr Burton was educated at Kulpi State School and Downlands College and began his equestrian journey with the Brymaroo Pony Club.

“While competing internationally he has maintained a strong connection to his hometown and remains one of the Toowoomba Region’s most successful sporting exports,” Mayor McDonald said.

Mayor McDonald also acknowledged Mr Burton’s advocacy for the Toowoomba Region to host equestrian events as part of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“As an Olympic medallist and internationally respected competitor, Chris brings enormous credibility to the case for Toowoomba hosting equestrian events in 2032,” he said.

“His advocacy highlights our Region’s world‑class equestrian culture, outstanding agricultural and equine environment and suitability to host elite international competition.”

At the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 17 March, Council unanimously supported the motion to grant Chris Burton the Keys to the City in recognition of his outstanding international sporting achievements, his enduring connection to the Toowoomba Region and his advocacy for the Region’s role in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
