Towing power is usually the first specification we look at when buying a new towing vehicle — after all, we need to make sure the car can comfortably tow a fully laden horse float!

However, the ultimate towing vehicle is about more than just towing capacity… there are other key features to consider when it comes to finding the perfect car.

Safety and convenience are paramount! The Audi Q7 delivers first class safety features, with an array of air bags, plus a 360-degree camera, which is of great assistance parking in the city and also for reversing to hitch up the float. The unfolding or dropping of the rear two seats can be done via electronic switch in the boot. The middle row folds in a 35-30-35 and when they are laid flat there is an excellent 1955 litre load area. Boot space generally is an amazing 770 litres, which is so handy. It easily fits several saddles, tack, rugs, buckets and much more. All five rear seats have Isofix anchorage points, which is perfect for the growing family.

And of course, fuel economy when towing is very important. The Q7 is outstanding given is size and performance, running at around 6 litres/100 km.

Combine these handy features with a braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg, and you have the ideal car for towing your bigger straight and angle load floats and horses!

Amanda Ross’s must-have features

Eventing star Amanda Ross has towed a few horses in her time… here are some of her key towing vehicle requirements:

An adjustable seat.

The seat needs to go up high enough so I can see over the dashboard!
Sitting with my hips no lower than my knees reduces hip soreness from driving long hours.
Good variable lumbar support, especially after riding cross country on a horse who pulls.

Hands free everything so I can focus on driving the precious cargo.

Easy to clean, both inside and out!

A big boot with a rubber liner for all the muddy/hairy/dusty things!

Written in conjunction with Zagame.
