Veterinarians warn horse owners to guard against Japanese encephalitis
The Guardian has reported that veterinarians are warning horse owners in Australia’s flood zones to guard against Japanese encephalitis, a virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes
Widespread flooding and warmer days have created the perfect storm for mosquito-borne diseases across eastern Australia, and it’s important for owners to be on the lookout for symptoms in their animals.
Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was first detected in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia earlier this year. Most cases are asymptomatic but it can also cause severe infection and death. There have also been 35 “highly probably” positive cases of the disease in horses in Queensland and NSW, including three deaths.
