Aussies in action at Aston le Walls
By Equestrian Life
Aston Le Walls, in South Northamptonshire, England, had plenty of eventing action over the weekend (12-16 August), with a number of Aussies taking the opportunity to get back into the swing of regular competitions.
The British Eventing competition featured many big names in the sport, including Piggy March, Oliver Townend, William Fox-Pitt, Rosalind Canter, Andrew Nicholson, Pippa Funnell and our very own seven-time Olympian, Andrew Hoy. Attracting a large number of competitors, virtually every level was split across multiple sections.
Riding John and Louise Ayre’s stunning grey Basmati, Andrew was sixth in the Open Intermediate. The pair scored 29.1 in the dressage and added just 3.2 cross country time penalties to their score for a total of 32.3.
“Another fabulous double clear for John and Louise Ayre’s Basmati at Aston Le Walls today on a super dressage score of 29.1,” said Andrew via Instagram.
“That’s three double clears on all of his last runs in a row – I am so very proud of him and so very happy for John and Louise, who have been such wonderful supporters of mine for many years.”
Fellow Australian Bill Levett finished second in his section of the Intermediate with Huberthus AC; the pair added just 4.4 cross country time faults to their dressage score for a total of 37.6. Bill was also third in one of the Novice sections on RNH Hendricks, finishing on their dressage score of 31.8.
Sammi Birch and Finduss PFB were seventh in their section of the Advanced, adding just one showjump rail and 9.2 time penalties to their dressage score to finish on 43.2.
Sophie Adams also had a great weekend, finishing 15th in her first Advanced class with Ridire Dorcha. Showjumping in the wet at the end of the class meant a couple of rails fell, however the pair were clear cross country with just time penalties to their name for a total of 60.9. Pippa Funnell, whom Sophie works for at the Billy Stud, won the class with Billy Walk On. Pippa’s 2019 Burghley winner, MGH Grafton Street, finished ninth.
We spoke to Sophie about her adventures in the UK in the July issue of Equestrian Life magazine, which you can catch up on here.
