Boyd Martin’s 2016 Rio Olympic mount, Blackfoot Mystery has been sold to a young rider in Dallas, Texas.
The 17-year-old chestnut gelding, who is known fondly as “Big Red”, was initially bred for the racetrack, but swiftly transitioned to the eventing scene, where he started his career with Kelly Prather. Big Red rapidly progressed up the grades, and was purchased by Martin, along with 12 syndicate members, in 2015.
Martin said “I was very lucky to purchase Big Red off Kelly Prather, who had done the bulk of the training with Red since he retired from racing.”
Soon after purchase, Martin and the talented ex-racehorse placed 6th at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, in the CCI5*, and was also selected to represent the United States at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where they placed 16th individually.
When asked about the sale, Martin said “I can’t tell you how happy I am that his career has got a new life with a new rider from Dallas, Texas. To me this is the perfect transition for Big Red: he’s still sound and happy and keen to go to work. His new accommodations in Dallas are first-class, and I’m guessing he will show his new rider a great taste of eventing at the lower levels.”
Equestrian Life wishes Blackfood Mystery all the best with his new home!
