Whisker and inner ear trimming has been added to the list of what Equestrian Sports New Zealand considers abuse of the horse in its General Regulations. The decision was made in conjunction with New Zealand Pony Club Association, and applies to horses and ponies competing in ESNZ and Pony Club sanctioned events and activities.
Under the ruling, trimming of outer ear hair and the finer hair under the jawline is permitted.
New Zealand’s ban on removal of these sensitive hairs, used by horses to navigate their surroundigs, follows similar rulings in France, Switzerland and Germany.
Further details about New Zealand’s ruling, including a guide to what can and can’t be trimmed, can be found here.
