Eventing legend Sir Mark Todd trains first UK winner on the track

NZ eventing legend Sir Mark Todd has recorded his first winner on a UK racetrack. Four year old Petit Bay won the Racecourse Supporting Frontline Workers handicap at Leicester on 30 June. The horse is owned by Bobby Allan and was ridden by jockey Jack Mitchell.

The race was a little out of the ordinary. Due to a localised lockdown, most barrier staff could not attend the meeting and so the race was a standing start with a flag — rather than traditional jump-out barriers!

The dual Olympic gold medallist and four-time Badminton winner has already enjoyed success on the track in New Zealand, with winners in 2003 and 2007 during his first stint as s a racehorse trainer after his retirement from eventing 19 years ago. However, Mark ultimately returned to the eventing circuit and didn’t retire again until September 2019 — following his second retirement from eventing, he has again picked up the reins as a racehorse trainer.
