From the Australian Youth Dressage Championships to the world
By Equestrian Life
The Australian Youth Dressage Championships attract many of the best young riders from around the country, serving not only as a recognition of talent at a national level – but also providing a springboard for riders dreaming big.
The 2024 Gala Equine Australian Youth Dressage Championships are running from 19-21 July at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre in Caboolture, and once again promise a fantastic showcase of our up-and-coming young stars.
Several riders who shone at last year’s Nationals are this year competing on the international stage, including Kate Kyros, Tia Rose McKenzie and Abby Weel.
Twenty-year-old Kate – the 2023 FEI U25 Grand Prix Champion with Chemistry and FEI Young Rider Reserve Champion with Intro K – has been making waves in the USA and now Europe. Competing at seven CDI across the two continents this year, Kate is currently ranked fourth in the FEI Dressage World Young Rider Ranking with Intro K and sixth in the FEI Dressage World U-25 Ranking with Chemistry. This weekend, she’s preparing to start at Haras de Jardy CDI in France (14-16 June).

Tia Rose McKenzie, 16, and Abby Weel, 13, are both in action at the prestigious ‘Future Champions’ – a youth Nations Cup dressage event currently underway in Hagen, Germany – where they are part of a team of eight young Aussies competing on borrowed horses.
Tia was the Novice Reserve Champion with TS Lady Ashberry at the 2023 Nationals and was of course also the FEI Junior Champion with Phenomenon. Tia is part of the Australian Junior (CDIO-J) team at Future Champions.
Abby was the FEI Pony Champion at last year’s Nationals with the gorgeous Reitlands Obama, and is part of the Children’s (CDIO-Ch) team in Hagen. You can find out more about the Aussie team at Future Champions in the June issue of Equestrian Life magazine here.
