Irish showjumper, Kevin Babington is reportedly doing well after undergoing a five-hour surgery, after sustaining a serious spinal cord injury in a fall at the Hampton Classic Horse Show late last month.
The 51-year-old Irishman was airlifted from the event to the Stony Brook University Hospital, and was then later transferred to the New York University Langone Medical Centre in Manhattan.
The injury was sustained after his 14-year-old Hanoverian mare, Shorapur had a fall at one of the fences during the qualifying round for the CSI4* Grand Prix.
The organiser of Kevin’s GoFundMe page, Kathy Gilbert released an update on the fourth of September which read, “Kevin is out of surgery and is now recovering. The surgery went well. The vertebrae were fused and his neck is stabilised. He is out of the collar and breathing on his own! Her is in significant pain but this was a necessary step. After a few days the family will see where he’s at. Hopefully, PT then rehab.”
