The RSPCA has executed an incredible rescue of a cob mare that became fully submerged in a deep bog in Wales.
Farrah the mare escaped from her normal paddock on the island of Anglesey and wandered into a field filled with treacherous, muddy bogs on Friday.
The mare became trapped in a deep bog but was able to keep her head above the mud until an RSPCA water rescue team arrived.
RSPCA inspector Mark Roberts said Farrah was unable to touch the bottom with her feet and the team had to work quickly to free her from the mud.
“This poor horse was well and truly stuck in the bog up to her neck. It was so deep I don’t think her hooves even reached the bottom,” Insp. Roberts said.
“The area around the horse was a thick mat of moss, reeds and roots as well as mud so we had to force our arms as far as we could to get two straps around the horse’s body,” he said.
“This was the hardest and most time-consuming part of the rescue.”
“We then placed a sheet over some moss which had created a kind of raft and a vet from Bodrwnsiwn Veterinary Practice on Anglesey arranged for a local contractor to attend with a front loader which we connected to the straps underneath the horse.”

“We managed to drag the horse out and onto the sheet, but we had to tow her for about 20 or 30 metres before she was back onto solid ground.”
Inspector Roberts said Farrah was saved by her rugs which protected the mare from the cold while she was rescued.
“The vet checked the horse and miraculously her core temperature was normal as she had been wearing two rugs which probably saved her life and stopped hypothermia from setting in.”
Since her traumatic ordeal on Friday, Farrah has been recovering well with a stable temperature and a very thankful owner.
