The U.S. Government has made the decision to temporarily close the Miami Animal Import Centre to the arrival of new horses from the 19th of January, due to a handful of horses becoming unwell.
Six horses so far have reportably become ill with symptoms such as lameness, fever and diarrhoea. Three horses have unfortunately died, despite receiving immediate medical treatment.
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) are currently investigating the case and trying to determine the exact cause of the illness and death, but salmonella is the suspected cause.
More information will be released on the Equine Disease Communication Centre website.
