Adelinde Cornelissen’s career making horse and Olympic medal winning Grand Prix horse Parzival has passed away. He was turning 26.
While the Rio Games were Parzival’s final competition, the horse’s inclusion in the 2017 Dutch Grand Prix squad had people wondering whether Adelinde had changed her mind on retiring him. As it turned out, his 2016 scores were enough to have him named in the squad — but there were no plans for the horse to compete whatsoever.

The pair caused a stir at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games when Parzival felt a little off and was retired midway through the Grand Prix test. A spider bite incurred in the days leading up to the event was cited as a reason.
Adelinde and Parzival took home the silver medal behind Charlotte and Valegro at the 2012 London Olympics — as well as team bronze — in what was a highlight of the horse’s career. The pair also won the Grand Prix at the 2008 World Cup Final and finished second in the Special.
