A Queensland stockman, who starved to death more than a dozen horses on the Darling Downs, showed a “reckless disregard” for the well-being of his animals, a court has heard.

Terence John Oberle, 74, pleaded guilty in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court today to 21 counts of breaching his duty of care to an animal.

The court heard 14 horses were found dead on the property at Charlton near Toowoomba in 2020, while seven horses were in an emaciated state.

The seven surviving horses have since recovered.
