As a horse owner, rider or just someone who loves to spend time around these beautiful animals, there are many strange little things you probably find satisfying!
1. Pulling the self-opening string on a bag of chaff.
So very satisfying when it comes away cleanly – absolutely maddening when it gets stuck and you have to perform minor surgery on the bag in order to open it.
2. When picking out your horse’s hoof is completed in one single pick.
There’s nothing better than when that disc of hardened mud falls out in one piece, complete with the frog’s indentation. We’d rather not talk about those days when your horse decides to walk through what seems like a mixture of dirt and wet cement…
3. Tipping fresh shavings into a clean stable and spreading them around.
No, we don’t like cleaning the stable – but that final step sure is satisfying!
4. Sweeping.
Yes it’s a less-than-riveting chore, but there is something strangely therapeutic and satisfying about sweeping the stable floor clean.
5. That first ride on a freshly graded arena.
There’s something about stepping out onto a freshly graded arena – suddenly, your back is straight, your chin is held high, and my gosh – your horse is trotting like Valegro! It’s sure to hit the “riding refresh” button.
6. That final rinse.
You’ve done the hard yards scrubbing away with a sponge and shampoo – there’s something very satisfying about blasting away the foam to reveal the lovely clean horse underneath.
7. Running the comb through a completely detangled tail.
Sure, it took half a bottle of shampoo, a full bottle of conditioner and a litre of detangler to get there – but running that comb through slippery tail hairs makes it all worth it!
8. Pulling off an error-free dressage test.
Okay so some of us are aiming for a little more than simply error free, but when you’ve learnt the test in the car on the way to a Pony Club show it’s pretty darn satisfying to pull it off without that dreaded toot of the car horn mid test…
9. Blacking feet for a show and avoiding a serious spill.
If you black your horse’s feet for events, you will be well aware that it’s virtually impossible to perform this task without serious spillage – usually caused by your usually quiet horse taking fright as you try to add a final touch up to the last hoof.
We’ve all sported a hand/arm/face splattered with black enamel; avoiding this scenario when blacking your horse’s feet is definitely satisfying!
10. Getting into bed at the end of a long day with the horses.
Whether it’s a big day at the stables or a long day (or weekend) at a competition, there’s nothing better than giving your horse his dinner and then jumping into bed. This one really isn’t strange at all…
