Thoroughbreds dominate at 2026 Capel CCI

The eventing season is in full swing with many states hosting CCIs – and Western Australia is no exception. The Capel Pony Club CCI featured classes ranging from Ev50 to CCI4*S, with off-the-track Thoroughbreds (OTTs) sweeping the top spots in all three international classes.

The Shire of Capel CCI4*S was a showcase of OTT talent and gave top-level West Australian combinations the chance to have a run at the level ahead of upcoming major events such Adelaide Equestrian Festival. Many were no doubt looking for confidence-building cross country runs early in the season, with time less of a concern.

Charlee Morton-Sharp and SV Supermaxi (OTT) held their lead from the dressage – where they posted a strong score of 35.2 penalties –adding 8 show jumping penalties plus 23.6 time penalties in cross country for a total score of 66.8. In second was Riley Lyall and GI War Machine (OTT) on 76.8, followed by Sarah Dawson and Imposing (OTT) with 92.6, rounding out an OTT-filled podium.

OTTs continued their dominance with Isobel Stevens-Menzie and Azarax (OTT) winning the Eucla Motel Hotel CCI3*S with a final score of 43.5. The combination were second after dressage and then were one of only two combinations to go clear on cross country (adding only 3.6 time penalties), which secured them the win. In second was Kathryn Ingham and Asti Hera with a final score of 65.8 and in third was Tessa Sharman and Cuba RL, who had led the field after dressage on 28.8 penalties before a costly cross country phase saw them finish on a score of 79.6.

Riley Lyall and Order is Restored (OTT) produced an outstanding performance in the Doral Mineral Sands CCI2*S. The combination produced a tidy dressage test to finish in the lead on 28.8 penalties and then added no further penalties and produced the fastest time on cross country to secure the win by almost 10 penalties.
