US rule change means mules can jump

A rule change in the USA means that mules can now take part in US Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) affiliated events.

Katie Wetteland, who lives in Colorado, petitioned the USHJA to allow mules to compete after finding out that her own mule, Mjolnir The Longear, was a talented and enthusiastic jumper.

During its annual meeting on 15 December, the USHJA board of directors approved a rule change allowing mules to compete in jumper divisions.

In recent years, British Dressage has allowed mules to compete, as does the United States Dressage Federation and the FEI.

You can read more about Katie Wetteland’s campaign to compete Mjolnir The Longear in USHJA events in the August 2020 issue of Equestrian Life magazine.
