Tom McDermott and the talented 10-year-old bay gelding, Alpha Activity were victorious in the World Cup Qualifying class at the Royal Melbourne Show. The class, which consisted of some of Australia’s top showjumping combinations, was the fifth event in the 2019-2020 Australian World Cup Qualifying Series.

The World Cup Qualifying Class saw all four previous winning combinations from this year’s season, which included Clay Simmonds and Oaks Castanza, Tom McDermott and Elegance De La Charmille, Billy Raymont and Anton and Russell Johnstone and Daprice.

The challenging first round saw 30 combinations enter the ring, with three retirements, and very few producing a clear round.

The second round saw 12 combinations enter the ring, which included the nine faultless combinations, as well as the other three fastest 4-fault combinations, which included Clay Simmonds, Clint Beresford and Melissa Blair

The last competitor to enter the ring was Tom McDermott and Alpha Activity. The combination entered the ring, knowing exactly what was required of them in order to claim the title, which was to produce a clear round, in less than 52.61 seconds, which was secured by Jamie Kermond and Yandoo Oaks Constellation.

After a quick warmup, McDermott and Alpha Activity produced a super clear and fast round, picking up a time of 50.96 seconds, which saw the combination finish up in deserving first place.

Second place was awarded to Jamie Kermond and Yandoo Oaks Constellation, with a time of 52.61 seconds, while third place went to Gabrielle Kuna and Flaire, with a time of 55.44 seconds.
